Medical Laboratory Technology

As a vital member of the health care team, Medical  Laboratory Technicians (MLT’s) perform a variety of complex biological and chemical analyses on patient specimens both manually and with sophisticated laboratory equipment.  These analyses assist the physician in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease.

The suggested curriculum is weighted heavily in the sciences and hands-on laboratory experiences.  In anticipation of completing the required pre-requisites for the program the student may apply to the program in January to begin the applicable MLT classes in June.  After completing the necessary lecture classes and student labs, the MLT student will perform a 16-week clinical rotation during the spring semester with an anticipated May graduation date.

Certification/Licensure

The MLT program prepares the student to sit for a national certification exam.  Those who successfully pass this examination are classified as an MLT (ASCP) with full privileges of a certified medical laboratory technician.  The state of West Virginia also requires that MLT’s be licensed after graduating and, in order to maintain that licensure, annual continuing education must be obtained in current laboratory practices and methodologies.

Graduation, placement and pass rates MLT Certification Exam

  • Certification pass rates within the first year after graduation: 100%
  • Graduation rates of students beginning the last half of the program: 100%
  • Graduation placement rates: 90%

These numbers were calculated from a 3 year rolling average (2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016).
