As a vital member of the health care team, Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT’s) perform a variety of complex biological and chemical analyses on patient specimens both manually and with sophisticated laboratory equipment. These analyses assist the physician in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease.
The suggested curriculum is weighted heavily in the sciences and hands-on laboratory experiences. In anticipation of completing the required pre-requisites for the program the student may apply to the program in January to begin the applicable MLT classes in May. After completing the necessary lecture classes and student labs, the MLT student will perform a 15-week clinical rotation during the spring semester with an anticipated May graduation date.
MLT students can continue their education by obtaining a Bachelor's of Science - Clinical Laboratory Science Degree at various institutions. BridgeValley has a formal affiliation agreement with Marshall University for MLT students.

More About the Program
Certification/Licensure
The MLT program prepares the student to sit for a national certification exam. Those who successfully pass this examination are classified as an MLT (ASCP) with full privileges of a certified medical laboratory technician. The state of West Virginia also requires that MLT’s be licensed after graduating and, in order to maintain that licensure, annual continuing education must be obtained in current laboratory practices and methodologies.

Accreditation Information
A process of external peer review in which NAACLS grants public recognition to education programs that meet established education standards in clinical laboratory science disciplines of Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Doctoral Clinical Laboratory Scientist (DCLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Cytogenetic Technologist (CG), Diagnostic Molecular Scientist (DMS), Histotechnician (HT), Histotechnologist (HTL), and Pathologists' Assistant (Path A). All accredited programs are required to submit a self-study and host a site visit in the cyclical review process. Accredited programs are eligible for a maximum award of ten years. These programs must either grant the associate degree or higher or a certificate of completion (if students already hold a degree) upon the successful culmination. The NAACLS Accreditation process is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
