Cardiac Sonography

Career Description

Cardiac Sonographers, also known as echocardiographers, are health care professionals specially trained to use ultrasound technology in the evaluation of the heart and surrounding structures. Echocardiographers provide valuable diagnostic information to assist physicians in identifying heart problems and associated diseases to expedite patient care.

A career in echocardiography can be very rewarding. Individuals that are interested in meaningful, fast-paced, patient-centered work may enjoy a career in cardiac sonography.

Program Description

The Cardiac Sonography Program leads to an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree. The program prepares selected individuals through theory, lab, and clinical experience to practice as echocardiographers in a variety of health care settings. The Cardiac Sonography program is a limited enrollment program. Admission into the program is competitive requiring a minimum GPA of 2.75 to apply for admission. The highest ranked students that meet qualification requirements and deadlines will be provisionally admitted first.

* PSYC 101/PSYC 201 may be taken after admission into the sonography program however completion is strongly encouraged prior to the DMS program.

** Successful completion of DMSU 100-Introduction to Sonography does not guarantee acceptance into the Sonography Program.
NOTE: A drug screen and criminal background check will be required prior to enrollment in the cardiac sonography program in order to ensure the safety of patients in the clinical setting. Students who do not comply with the drug screening and the criminal background check are ineligible for placement at clinical sites and therefore are not able to progress in the CS program.
~Students must take and pass the ARDMS SPI Physics exam to successfully complete the cardiac sonography program~
