First-Generation College Students

First Generation 2024

BridgeValley Community and Technical College is dedicated to empowering first-generation college students by providing comprehensive support in academics, campus life, and career development throughout their educational journey and beyond.  Many alumni, staff and faculty at BVCTC were first-generation students, so we understand. You are not alone.

Am I First-Gen?

There are a few different definitions of "first-gen", meaning a first-generation college student. This information may help you to determine whether you're a first-gen student.

At BridgeValley, students are considered first-generation college students if you are the first person in the family to attend (and graduate) from college.

If your parents took a few college classes but didn't finish a degree, you will often be considered a first-generation student.

Yes. Being a first-generation student means that your parent(s) did not complete a community college or university degree, regardless of other family member’s level of education. Older siblings and family members who attended college may be a great resource as you navigate your college journey!

First Gen Stories

BridgeValley Community and Technical College students, staff, faculty, and alumni who are first-generation students and graduates proudly share their stories and experiences.

Roughly 1 in 4 students at BridgeValley are the first in their family to attend college. What has your experience been like as a first-gen at BridgeValley? If you are a student, faculty, staff, or alumnus/alumna from BridgeValley you are welcome to share your story.
