The WIN Academy is an early college, charter school that provides a dynamic, accelerated college program for high school juniors and seniors. The WIN Academy is free to students.
The Academy is designed to allow high school students to complete the first year of a college major (i.e. nursing and manufacturing) during high school. Students can complete their degree just one year after high school graduation.
Through the WIN Academy, students will:
- Attend the WIN Academy at BVCTC’s South Charleston campus
- Complete their high school requirements for high school graduation
- Receive a high school diploma from the WIN Academy
- Complete college courses to prepare them to enter their chosen college major (i.e. nursing or manufacturing) as high school juniors
- Save one full year of college costs
- For nursing students:
- Complete their first year in an accredited RN educational program as high school seniors
- Complete the full RN program within a year after high school graduation
- Receive their Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in nursing
- Be qualified to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam
- Be able to transfer to a four-year BSN program to continue their education.
The Academy serves its students with innovative, high-quality, interactive, in-depth and engaging instructional approaches. Students follow BVCTC’s existing accredited program sequences, which includes a combination of:
- Classroom Instruction
- Laboratory Practice
- Clinical Experience
The WIN Academy is designed to help students complete their associate degree and secure in-demand/high-wage positions quickly after high school.
BVCTC is the educational partner for the WIN Academy. and the WV state charter school board is the authorizer for the charter school. BridgeValley leverages its accredited, cost-effective associate-level program in programs to provide this opportunity to students in West Virginia. WIN Academy students are instructed alongside other college students in BVCTC’s existing programs at the South Charleston campus.
WIN Academy faculty are experienced BVCTC educators who are professionally talented and passionate about teaching. Their goal is to help students reach the highest academic standards and achieve the requirements to continue their RN education and enter the nursing workforce.
- Through the WIN Academy, students will complete their junior- and senior-year high school requirements for graduation, complete their first year in an accredited educational program and complete second and final year in BVCTC’s associate-level programs.
- Students from all over West Virginia are eligible for the WIN Academy through West Virginia’s open enrollment laws. Any high school junior or senior in West Virginia who is at least 16 years old is welcome to enroll at the WIN Academy.
- WIN Academy students who want to major in nursing must maintain a 3.0 GPA to ensure they meet the RN program graduation requirements.
If you or your child will be a high school junior or senior and would like to attend the WIN Academy, the first step is to complete the application. The application window, timeline for enrollment and other important dates are outlined below.
WIN Academy Application & Enrollment Timeline
- Applications can be submitted at any time but are due by March 1 for priority consideration for the fall.
- Information sessions/open houses will be held in December and January
- Students are selected by March 4th (prior to the academic year)
- Student orientation and placement testing take place in March
- Students must commit to the program by April 15th
- Optional summer WIN Academy classes start in May
- Regular WIN Academy classes start in August

The WIN Academy hosts open house events each year so that prospective students, parents and other in the community can visit the campus and get an inside look at our campus, facilities and student services – including the newly remodeled Booker T. Washington Nursing Wing, including its state-of-the-art simulation labs, an assessment lab, hospital nurses’ station and more.

The WIN Academy is located in the newly renovated, state-of-the-art instructional building (Building 2000), on BVCTC’s South Charleston campus. The new renovations include improved wet labs and an expansion of the nursing program into the North Wing on the third floor.

The mission of the WIN Academy is to provide a dynamic, accelerated educational experience in a traditional community college setting that empowers high school junior and senior academy students o achieve the following:
- Master the K-12 curriculum for the State of West Virginia high schools;
- Prepare high school juniors to enter the college program as seniors.
- Attain academic success as a high school senior/graduate and start a college major;
- Complete the high school graduation requirements;
- Finish the first year of an accredited college program at BVCTC as a high school student;
- Enroll as a community college student at BVCTC as a second-year nursing student upon high school graduation; and
- Complete their Associate of Applied Science (AAS) one year after high school graduation.

The Governing Board for the WIN Academy has grassroots feel with area residents serving on the board. Win Academy board members:
- Mason Bishop, chair, a small business owner focused on helping students enter the workforce. Mason brings federal US Department of Labor experience to our Board and a strong commitment to innovation in education and workforce training.
- Barry Holstein, President of the Cross Lanes Community Development Council – a position that he has held since 2014. As president of Cross Lanes, Mr. Holstein provides oversight in the development of housing, neighborhood revitalization and community development for the region. Mr. Holstein will bring his business and community development expertise to the project to provide guidance on administration, staffing, instruction, budget among other areas.
- Andrea Kiessling, a small business owner, also will serve as a board member. Kiessling brings her experience in leadership, finance and business operations to the WIN Academy – assets that will help the program maintain financial and operational viability.
- Lori Lipscomb, is a parent representative. Born and raised in South Charleston, Lori has strong ties and interest in the Bridge Valley local community. Lori is a graduate of West Virginia State University with a degree in Finance and has been employed for the past twenty years with the Charleston Police Department, assigned primarily to the local drug enforcement task force. Lori’s vision is in bringing the opportunities WIN Academy can offer to non-traditional learners and furthering WIN Academy’s growth to underserved communities within the county who have students that could benefit from career-based education and who may otherwise fall through the cracks in traditional high school environments.
- Diane Bedwell, parent member.
- Elena Compton, is a West Virginia native. She received her bachelor’s in social work from Marshall University. Her passion for education and increasing literacy rates around the state led her to Read Aloud West Virginia working as their Development and Grants Manager, she also works as a part-time tutor for the Appalachian Reading Center and is a Learn to Skate Instructor at the South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena.
